Natural hazards such as floods, fires, earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, and blizzards affect thousands of people every year. We need to know what our risks are from natural hazards and take sensible precautions to protect ourselves, our families, and our communities.
Of all of the types of threats to our well being, weather-related emergencies have historically taken the highest toll in terms of lives and property damage. Floods and fires have caused more property damage and loss of life in our region than any other natural disaster. In addition, natural disasters are far more likely to pose a threat than terrorist incidents or industrial accidents.
While the Northwest PA region is not very prone to earthquakes, recent history shows it has suffered from tornadoes, hurricanes, and the threat of floods, fires, blizzards, and droughts.
